• Question: who started wanting to make crops bigger?

      Humans have actually been trying to make better crops with higher yields for thousands of years, to begin with this was just done by farmers selecting for the best traits each growing season and over hundreds or even thousands of years this was able to improve yields. I

      nterestingly having a higher yielding crop doesn’t necessarily mean that it is bigger as most of the wheat grown in this country is a dwarf variety because more energy can be put into seed production as opposed to the stem and height.

      One of the more recent programs aimed at improving crop yields was the green revolution which occured between 1940-1970. This was able to produce high yielding varieties of crops such as wheat and rice but these varieties do require more chemicals to be put onto the crops.
