      I always say the egg – what we know of as chickens these days will have evolved from something else. So the egg that the first chicken came out of won’t have been laid by a chicken! Does that make sense?

      Also, you can argue that if you don’t specify chicken egg then the egg definitely came first because dinosaurs laid eggs (so Jurassic Park tells me!) and they were around way before chickens!

      I like Jen’s reply (and agree with it) but just to shake things up a bit lets ask another question, can a true chicken egg only be laid by a chicken? If you use this logic then the egg that the first chicken came out of was not a true chicken egg as it was laid by something else and therefore the chicken must have come first.

      So it seems that you could argue for either the chicken or the egg coming first – it really depends on which you prefer………
