I get what is called a stipend from a funding body called the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC). STFC basically get money from the government to give to experiments and people to do research into particle, astro and nuclear physics. They help to pay for big telescopes and the LHC and things like that.

For me and lots of other PhD students they pay our tutition fees to the university and then give us just over £13,000 a year so that we can pay for somewhere to live and food and other important things like that. It’s not taxed so I get just over £1000 a month which is plenty for me to live off while I’m a student.

Far more than when I was an undergraduate student and it’s enough to live off of. In fact your question got me thinking and I worked out that if I got paid the same amount for the next 11 years and didn’t spend anything then I could actually afford a Ferrari.
