For sure, no. When i was at school i had no idea that I might ever leave Glasgow never mind what career I might have. I kind of gravitated towards science as I realised in school that I enjoyed the curiosity aspects of science subjects and then a whole series of circumstances just seem to have unfolded over the years. And until 4 years ago I had no idea I’d end up in Newcastle!

Not at all! In primary school I wanted to be a vet or an RSPCA officer. In secondary school I wanted to be lots of things – I remember wanting to be an astronaut, a professional flute player and a rock star. Even when doing my A levels I still secretly wanted to be a rock star! It wasn’t until university that I realised that I loved astronomy and wanted to do it for a living. Even now I’m not sure if I want to do research full time – I love doing it but I always love doing things like this and talking to people about astronomy and science in person or through my podcast. I also know that I don’t want to live in Manchester for the rest of my life!

Not at all, I had wanted to be a forensic scientist when I was in school – probably the result of watching too much CSI. Life is such a funny thing that plans change all the time and things happen which flip your goals round 180°C and in that spirit I don’t see the point of lots of 10 year plans but instead take life a little bit more how it comes.

When I was at school I knew that I wanted to go to college and never chose my A levels based on some ultimate career goal but just chose things that interested me so that I ended up doing Biology, maths, history and graphics. So if you don’t know what you want to do with your life after school then I wouldn’t worry about it.
