  sometimes my students look at me as though I’ve spoken the language of a being from another planet so maybe I have without knowing it!

  Nope, no humans have been to any of the other planets. We have sent robots to Mars though – NASA currently have a rover called Opportunity up there. Spacecraft have also been sent to orbit around other planets – Messenger recently went into orbit around Mercury, Venus Express is currently orbiting Venus, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter is going around Mars and Cassini is going around Saturn. There might be others I’ve forgotten about and there have been quite a few missions in the past that have now ended. The Voyager spacecraft were launched in the 70s and are now approaching the edge of the Solar System having gone past and looked at the outer planets. So people haven’t visited other planets but things that people made have and we get a lot of science out of these missions.

  No but I have been through the earth on an escalator at the natural history museum.
